Martial Arts is commonly praised for its physical benefits, but its mental benefits are not nearly as popular. While it is not as well known, the psychological element of practicing martial arts is just as important as the physical element.
Martial arts extolls the importance of managing change, being present, dealing with ambiguity, staying calm in stressful situations, and displaying humility. Fine-tuning awareness and control of subtle sensations in movement and dance training fosters continuous mindfulness of the body, and a deep sense of spiritual contemplation and reflection. True mindfulness goes beyond just helping us become technically skilled in that art.
Controlled breath is the connection between the physical and mental elements of martial arts. Practising martial arts forms is seen as a form of moving meditation. There is a rhythm to these forms that is best achieved with the breath. Focusing on the breath allows you to quiet your nerves, while controlling movement and sustaining endurance – an invaluable process especially in self-defense scenarios.
The repetitive training of martial arts develops self-discipline, as well as building muscle memory and reactive skills. Kids in particular benefit from practising martial arts because it provides the intense physical activity they need in a positive atmosphere. In turn, kids experience deeper sleep and more satisfying rest. However, students of all ages experience the positive cognitive and behavioural benefits of dedicated practice such as: increased emotional stability and intelligence, self-esteem, and self-control; and reduction in anxiety, depression, and impulsiveness.
One of the most revered dojo-kun, or training rules, is ‘Exert yourself in the perfection of character.’ This commandment reminds students to strive for positive goals and the perfection of oneself. Students get into the habit of constantly seeking improvement. Martial arts teaches students the importance of ambition and hard-work, prized qualities in all areas of life outside of martial arts as well.
We’ve outlined several of the mental benefits of practising martial arts. You may already be familiar with the physical benefits of martial arts, but with dedicated practice you will also uncover many psychological and behavioural benefits. Not only will you learn the skills and movements to defend yourself and others, but you will build the mental readiness and focus needed to carry out your teachings when you need it most.
